AFYON – On May 15, 2026, the TED University Department of Civil Engineering organized a technical field trip to the Park Afyon Shopping Mall expansion project to observe innovative developments in structural technologies and earthquake safety applications.
A delegation of 7 students, 4 faculty members, and 2 research assistants examined the "Seismic Isolator" systems, one of the most critical components of the project. During the visit, the seismicity and soil structure of the Afyon region were discussed, and the engineering rationale behind selecting seismic isolation for the structure was detailed.
Technical Analysis and Knowledge Exchange
Guided by faculty advisors and the project engineer, the team focused on the behavior of seismic isolators under dynamic loads and the technical advantages they provide. Furthermore, a comprehensive cost-benefit evaluation was conducted regarding the initial investment costs versus long-term structural safety and economic sustainability. Following the technical sessions, the group explored the historical landmarks of Afyon before concluding the day trip.
Acknowledgments
As the TEDU Department of Civil Engineering, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the ASYA team, the project engineers, and the site staff for hosting us, sharing their technical expertise with our students, and for their kind hospitality.
