Short Bio:

Dr. Metin Arıkan has received BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from Middle East Technical University in 1968 and 1971, respectively. He joined University of California-Berkeley in 1971 for his doctoral studies, worked on the behavior of suspension bridges under earthquake excitations as his thesis and received “Doctor of Philosophy” degree in 1975. Upon completion of doctoral studies, he returned back to Middle East Technical University as a faculty member lecturing structural analysis courses till 1978. From 1978 to 1987, Metin Arıkan worked in construction companies in Saudi Arabia as engineer and department manager, came back to Turkey in 1987, and took part in setting up a gypsum and gypsum board plant which was the first of such a plant in Turkey. He worked as the executive board member and general manager of the gypsum board company till 1992. From 1993 till his retirement in 2008, he lectured courses related to construction management, supervised MS theses, worked in several projects and offered consultancy services as an Assistant Professor in Middle East Technical University. During this period, he served as the chairman of the construction company, EBI, of the Development Foundation of the University . He also served as  the Deputy Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department from 1996 to 2000. Metin Arıkan was assigned by courts as an expert, several times, on the resolution of disputes arising from construction works contracts. His areas of interest include, construction cost control, construction works scheduling, safety in construction works, and subcontracting in construction projects. He continues lecturing on construction management topics in METU after his retirement.
